Susan A. Onderwyzer is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work by the American Board of Clinical Social Work. She is licensed in Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire. Dr. Onderwyzer holds a Masters Degree in Social Work (MSW) from Adelphi University, a Doctorate in Social Sciences Education (Ed.D.) from the University of Vermont and a Certificate in Advanced Clinical Supervision from Smith College.
As a Psychotherapist, Dr. Onderwyzer offers a range of options for clients in resolving past trauma, managing life transition, stress and making life changes. She works with clients who experience substance use disorders, histories of trauma, anxiety, depression, stages of life adjustments, bipolar disorder and other related emotional and behavioral health issues. She provides a safe space for exploring and working through the experiences of grief and loss as well as other life and relational transitions, using an eclectic approach to treatment including Evidence Based practices such as CBT and DBT, psychodynamic and trauma-informed approaches such as EMDR. As a psychotherapist for over 40 years, Dr. Onderwyzer has worked in multiple settings including outpatient, inpatient/residential and administrative positions. She is dedicated to working with people to help to achieve their best selves, as well as working to enhance the ways that systems function. Her clinical training is based in Psychodynamic Theory, Family Systems, and Recovery-Oriented/Trauma-Informed Care. Clients work with Dr. Onderwyzer to develop an individualized treatment plan and goals that form the path of their work together.
As a Clinical Supervisor, Dr. Onderwyzer offers a wealth of experience in working with clients in both individual, couples and family systems models. Using a relational approach, she meets supervisees where they are and works collaboratively to support clinical learning and professional growth with a firm grounding in the NASW Code of Ethics. The focus of clinical supervision is often the Use of Self in therapy, understanding the parameters of working in the field, either prior to or after having been licensed. She is Board of Mental Health approved Supervisor in NH.
Dr. Onderwyzer is a lifelong learner and equestrian with a passion for Dressage.
